Admired, Inspired 05.23.12

New feature! Admired, Inspired is showcase of some of my favorite links that I have, as you’ve probably already guessed, admired or been inspired by. Enjoy!

  • One of my favorite independent brands, Locher’s, known for their snarky and scandalous wording and beautiful feminine florals, have released some media wallpapers!
  • Skunkboy Creatures’ Katie shares how to style pinned back bangs. As summer approaches and the heat intensifies, it’ll be nice to keep my bangs out of the way!
  • I’m in love with these CSS3 social networking buttons by Zocial. Resizeable text- swoon! #DesignGeek #IKnowThisIsntTwitter #Haha
  • Derek Sivers, the founder of CD Baby, explains that smart people don’t think others are stupid. Keep an open mind, stay in empathy.
  • From July until the end of the year, Björk will be offering educational workshops for children in New York. Here’s a taste of what she did in Iceland last year; I wish I were a kid again!

  • Greg Rucka, I love you. He explains “Why I Write ‘Strong Female Characters’“.

The Quick Answer goes like this:

Q: How do you write such strong/well-realized/positively portrayed women?

A: I don’t. I write characters. Some of those characters are women.

  • In the comments of the aforementioned was a Joss Whedon video, from his acceptance speech at an Equality Now event, addressing the same issue. While the whole speech is gold, my favorite part may be around the six minute mark; when recalling how he answers this trite question, he gave a [jokingly] frustrated answer of, “Why aren’t you asking a hundred other guys why they don’t?

  • Kyla Roma divulged “What I Wish I Knew: Passion.” From the post:

Passion makes you irreplaceable. Being around someone who genuinely believes in and loves what they’re doing is addictive, and it also can’t be taught. People want to be around it, and employers want to hire people with it. Passion always stands out in a crowd, and it will give you the motivation and drive to get through the in-betweens in life that are difficult to navigate. Passion can only be accessed by you, and it will carry you forward to places you can’t imagine.

  • Finally, as I’m sure many of you have already seen, Neil Gaiman gave the Commencement Address to the graduating class at the University of the Arts. It pretty much broke my heart in the best possible way:

I hope these links/news/words have been inspiring in some way! Have you found anything that has motivated, encouraged, or excited you lately?
