  • Crispin Freeman, one of my favorite [voice] actors, discusses the Myth of the Hero as it relates to the female, a topic we all know fascinates me. One of these days I really hope to attend one of his Mythology and Meaning panels.

“As much as I love Joe Campbell, he does give short shrift to the female hero journey, and it’s very frustrating to me, so that’s part of why I developed my third anime mythology presentation, which is called ‘Mystics, Priestesses and Warrior Women.’ Traditionally, male hero journeys were more prominent because in traditional hunter-gatherer societies, a boy doesn’t become a man until he’s physically initiated… In those same traditional societies, a girl becomes a woman when she starts menstruating. When she starts menstruating, they put her in a hut and have her think about the fact she’s menstruating. Well, that might have worked back in hunter-gatherer times, but that doesn’t work now. That’s not enough to help girls now become self-actualized women. It’s vital we have female hero journeys—not just for girls, for boys, too. Boys and men need to understand the challenges women face as they go through their lives, and if men don’t, they’re doomed to perpetuate ridiculous chauvinism. It’s my personal flag I like to fly, because it’s about damn time that girls have more choices.”

  • Finally, the newest Geek & Sundry channel Player Piano is making me swoon! They’ve captured the eerie atmosphere and cyberpunk aesthetic of Akira so well. Can we talk about how badass that piano is too?

Earlier today I recommended TED.com to a friend and I realized that I had yet to share some of my favorites here. Seeing as how TED Talks epitomize the premise of the Admired, Inspired, it’s about time.

Without intending to, this particular set tends to lean toward creation/creativity and its effects; perhaps I’ll do another with a different theme (neuroscience! societal norms!).

Warning: TED Talks successfully fulfills the trope of the web video blackhole– you can’t stop at just one.

This week: the Superhero & Comics Edition!

  • Sarah Michelle Gellar is finally on twitter. That’s it, that’s the feature. (If I were to ramble on about the many reasons why this is a big deal to me, this would be a much longer post. I mean, I wrote about Buffy in my undergraduate thesis, so my flailing should not be a surprise.)
  • I like to believe that in a parallel universe (or at least one of them) the other me is a comic book author and artist, but now that the Masters of Anatomy Kickstarter is launching next week–October 11th! – I may have to take my drawing dreams a bit more seriously. From the book’s official site:

Master of Anatomy: The Ideal Male and Female, is a one-of-a-kind collection of artistic anatomy bringing together the work of 64 artists from different industries. Each artist recreates the Ideal Male and Female illustrated in their own signature style and without the aid of external reference. Each angle is neutral, symmetrical and unposed showing the front, side and 3/4 front angles in a classic animation turn-around. The goal: to translate a decades-old sketch into something more relevant to a modern aesthetic. The result is a volume unlike anything that exists today. A must have for any aspiring artist; digital or traditional.

  • Speaking of comic book creators who are living their dreams, the lovely ladies from Little Foolery announced their newest release for sale, That Which Wills: Virgo Rising. Astrology, magic, stellar storytelling and gorgeous art? Yes please!
  • Not that there was any doubt as to how perfect Lynda Carter was as Wonder Woman, a recent interview proves that she understands the character far more than most of the people at the top of television and movie industry.
  • Although there’s no new official live-action incarnation of Wonder Woman, unofficially there most certainly is, thanks to Rainfall Films. Badass unicorn Rileah Vanderbilt successfully embodies the character’s strength, grace, and spirit of sisterhood.

This week I’ve seem to lean towards healthy living. Then again, I should always do this, huh?

  • The Kickstarter Project, “Set Chopin Free,” aims to free Chopin’s music from the chains of copyrights. Music for all! (Re: the unofficial theme, I hope I don’t have to tell anyone how important music is for one’s health. ♥)
  • Isabel will be running “Coast-to-Coast” next year! I’m no runner, so I’m always awe-struck by people who can do marathons.
  • Yoga is more my style and if you’re in the market for a new mat, Magic Carpet Yoga Mats is the way to go. I’m in love with these colorways:

Missed last week, so to make up for it, this one has a little bit more to give!
